Study Details Public Planning Techniques
The Mineta
Transportation Institute, at San Jose State University,
has published a study that examines the challenge of gaining
public support for higher-density residential and mixed-use
development approaches that help limit sprawl and support
more livable forms of growth. The study -- Higher-Density
Plans: Tools for Community Engagement -- describes strategies
and methods, including nuts-and-bolts public involvement and
decision-making techniques and tools, and identifies both
potential stumbling blocks and keys to success.

McMahon Calls for a Walkable Delaware
Distinguished national planning expert Edward McMahon has
published a "Delaware Voice" column -- A
livable Delaware would be walkable -- in the November
9 edition of the News Journal. McMahon, a senior resident
fellow at the Urban Land Institute,
and author "Better
Models for Development in Delaware," writes that
he has found widespread support for managing growth in Delaware
and adds that "a growing number" of Delawareans
"recognize there are alternatives to sprawl that are
more attractive, walkable and profitable than strip malls
and cookie-cutter subdivisions."
